Who Found Massachusetts?

  • Founded in 1630 by John Winthrop and other Puritans at Massachusetts Bay.
  • Part of the New England Colonies
  • Name of Colonial Massachusetts is from the Algonquian tribe meaning "At the Great Hill".
  • We will explain puritanism and John Withrop in a moment

Geography

  • 110,555 Square Miles
  • Bordered by the following colonies: the North by New Hampshire and ; the West by New York; the South by Connecticut and Rhode Island; and the East by the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Nicknamed "The Bay State" because of all of its bays, which form the coastline.
  • lots of coasts and mountains ,and very thick forests.
  • The geography in Massachusetts is like the beautiful hills while having an ocean next to it

  • Many Puritan left to obtain religious freedom
  • The Puritans fallowed a strict moral code
  • Puritanism was a religious reform movement with in the church of England in the late 16 hundreds.

Who Was John Withrop?

  • John Withrop was born January 22 (January 12, Old style) 1588
  • He was born a puritan which is part of the reason he grew as a strong puritan
  • John Withrop was a strict puritan and the first governor of Massachusetts bay
  • John Withrop was a strong leader of Massachusetts

Economy

  • Natural materials that the colonists used were,fish,whales and timber from dense forests
  • Farming was difficult for crops like wheat because of poor soil. Corn, pumpkins, rye, squash and beans were planted for trade
  • Important businesses are sawmills, shipyards, tanneries and warehouses.
  • Lots of work at Massachusetts included the bays of Massachusetts fishing is very big in Massachusetts so if you love to fish this is the place to live!
