I have decided to research my last name. Mostly because I knew nothing about my dad's side of the family.

GREUEL DEFINITION AND ORIGIN

  • Greuel means Terror, horror, fear, ect.
  • "Greuel"s origin is Germany
  • "Greuel" also means: one who spreads fear among his enemies.

IMMIGRATION

  • The "Greuel"s first came to America in 1843 from Germany.
  • Many Germans immigrated to America between the the year of 1820-World War 1
  • From the years 1840-1880, Germans were the largest group of immigrants.

WHY DID THE "GREUEL"S IMMIGRATE?

  • After the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815 the German economy was suffering.
  • The potato famine of 1840

WHERE GERMANS SETTLED

  • German Americans are most densely settled in the traditional "German belt" of Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa.

FAMILY TRADITIONS

  • The "Greuel" family really doesn't have any Traditions except gathering on Christmas and Thanksgiving.
  • I am thinking about starting a Family book that I can pass on to my children for generations.
