Buzkashi

A Head of the Pack

What is Buzkashi?

  • Buzkashi is the national sport of Afghanistan.
  • Grusome sport where players use the "ball" as some sort of small dead animal.
  • 2 types - Quarajai and Tudabarai

In Tudabarai, in order to score, the rider must obtain possession of the carcass and then carry it away from the starting circle in any direction. The rider must stay free and clear of the other riders.

In Qarajai, the task is much more complex. The player must carry the calf around a marker, and then return the carcass to the team's designated scoring circle.

When was Buzkashi invented?

  • Not known for certain, many think somewhere around the reign of Genghis Kahn.
  • Village people trying to take their belongings back from Kahn's forces.
  • This occurred so often that the villagers started liking the thrill.

Genghis Khan was the founder of the Mongol Empire, which became the largest contiguous empire in history after his demise. He came to power by uniting many of the nomadic tribes of Northeast Asia.

How is Buzkashi played?

  • There is no limit on to how many players there can be.
  • 1 point is scored by picking up the carcass and 2 points by putting the carcass in the scoring circle.
  • Only rules are that one rider can't ram his horse into another players steer and that you cannot intentionally hit another rider with your whip.
