Exploring Resolved Issues: William Shakespeare’s The Tempest

By the spurs plucked up
the pine and cedar; graves at my command
have waked their sleepers / by my so potent art. But this rough magic
I here abjure (5.1.47-51).

- Prospero possesses power with no limits
- Prospero is prepared to give up his magic
- this is a solution because he is putting a stop to his wreck less use of his power
- characters can no longer be manipulated by Prospero’s magic

Ay that I will; and I'll be wiser hereafter,
and seek for grace. What a thrice-double ass
was I to take this drunkard for a God
and worship this dull fool [Stephano] (5.1.292-295).

- Issue is that Caliban has misjudged Stephano
- wrongly categorizes Stephano as a character worthy of being worshipped
- Caliban has come to his senses and realizes that Stephano is unworthy

“Thy dukedom I resign, and do entreat thou pardon me my wrongs” (5.1.117-118).

- Issue is that Prospero is usurped with the aid of Alonso
- Alonso’s power as king hinders his moral judgement
- Characterization of empathy
- Shakespeare supports the sincerity of Alonso because the offer demonstrates that Alonso truly feels remorse

imprisonment

Shakespeare alleviates the characters Ariel, Ferdinand and Prospero from their respective sufferings deriving from imprisonment

“My Ariel, chick/ That is thy charge…Be free and fare thou well” (5.1.314-316).

-Prospero’s imprisonment over Ariel holds him in captivity by demands
-these demanded tasks diminish Ariel’s character by preventing him from acting freely
-Prospero rewards Ariel for his diligent service by freeing him, removing all control against him.
-Shakespeare is suggesting that imprisonment is detrimental to individuals as it removes the freedom of choice which allows characters to develop to their full potential

“If I have too austerely punished you/ Your compensation makes amends, for I/ have given you here a third of mine own life” (4.1.1-3).

- Prospero also accuses Ferdinand being a spy or a potential usurper
-Ferdinand is willing to surrender his privileges for love
-Prospero compensates Ferdinand for his work by giving Ferdinand his approval to marrying Miranda -Shakespeare is suggesting that true love comes with obstacles

Shakespeare successfully resolves the issue of imprisonment by freeing characters Ariel, Ferdinand and Prospero that underwent detrimental miseries stemming from imprisonment as it confines characters’ liberty and creates restraints on growth.

My master through his art foresees the danger
That you, his friend, are in, and sends me forth –
For else his project dies – to keep them living
…Shake off slumber and beware.
Awake, awake. (II.i.294-296, 301-302).
