How do you become the President?

  • The candidate must be at least 35 years old.
  • They must be a natural-born United States citizen.
  • They must have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years.
  • The Candidate must be elected for their party in what is known as the "Primary."

Some important things about the Presidency:

  • A president can only serve two full terms of 4 years.
  • They do not have to be consecutive.
  • President Grover Cleveland is the only President to serve two non consecutive terms.
  • He was the 22nd and 24th President.
  • He was known to be honest, independent, and opposed corruption.

What if a President is bad?

  • The President takes an oath to uphold the many responsibilities they have.
  • If they do not uphold these responsibilities or participate in any misconduct, they can be impeached.
  • Impeachment is a trial that determines whether or not the President can be President anymore.
  • The only two Presidents to be impeached were Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Both were found not guilty.
  • Richard Nixon is the only President to ever resign. He wanted to avoid impeachment.

Does anyone help the President?

  • The President has a "cabinet" which is a group of his most trusted people that help him make his important decisions.
  • George Washington's cabinet only had only four members (also known as secretaries).
  • Today, the President's cabinet has fifteen secretaries and many other members.
  • Some of these include: Secretaries of Agriculture, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Energy, Education, and Homeland Security are among some of the other Cabinet members.
