Why Self-Assess?

  • How can you select one occupation out of hundreds?
  • To determine your interests, educational goals, skill, preferences, and so on, you will need to do a self-assessment.

Interest Self-Assessment

  • Dr. Holland’s Personality/Interest Categories: Dr. John Holland developed a theory concerning career choice and interests.
  • Realistic or doers,
  • Investigative or thinkers,
  • Artistic or creators,
  • Social or helpers,
  • Enterprising or persuaders, and
  • Conventional or organizers

Realistic

  • Realistic “R”: A realistic or doer is a person who:
  • Likes to work with plants, animals, tools, equipment or machines,
  • Is good at working with their hands, and
  • Values practical things.

Investigative

  • Investigative “I”: An investigative or thinker is a person who likes to study and solve math or science problems.
  • They see themselves as precise, scientific and intellectual.
  • A thinker generally avoids leading, selling, or persuading people

Artistic

  • Artistic “A”: An artistic or creative type is a person who likes to do creative activities like art, drama, crafts, dance, music, or creative writing.
  • They see themselves as expressive, original, and independent.
  • A creative person generally avoids highly ordered or repetitive activities.

  • Social “S”: A social or helper is a person who:
  • Is good at teaching, counseling, nursing, or giving information, and
  • Values helping people and solving peoples’ problems

Enterprising

  • Enterprising “E”: An enterprising person or persuader is a person who:
  • Is good at leading people and selling things or ideas, and
  • Values success in politics, leadership, or business
