Habakkuk 2:2-20

The Lord’s Answer
2 Then the Lord replied:

“Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald[b] may run with it.
3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it[c] will certainly come
and will not delay.

4 “See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness[d]—
5 indeed, wine betrays him;
he is arrogant and never at rest.
Because he is as greedy as the grave
and like death is never satisfied,
he gathers to himself all the nations
and takes captive all the peoples.

6 “Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying,

“‘Woe to him who piles up stolen goods
and makes himself wealthy by extortion!
How long must this go on?’
7 Will not your creditors suddenly arise?
Will they not wake up and make you tremble?
Then you will become their prey.
8 Because you have plundered many nations,
the peoples who are left will plunder you.
For you have shed human blood;
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

9 “Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,
setting his nest on high
to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin of many peoples,
shaming your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones of the wall will cry out,
and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.

12 “Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed
and establishes a town by injustice!
13 Has not the Lord Almighty determined
that the people’s labor is only fuel for the fire,
that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing?
14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

15 “Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors,
pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk,
so that he can gaze on their naked bodies!
16 You will be filled with shame instead of glory.
Now it is your turn! Drink and let your nakedness be exposed[e]!
The cup from the Lord’s right hand is coming around to you,
and disgrace will cover your glory.
17 The violence you have done to Lebanon will overwhelm you,
and your destruction of animals will terrify you.
For you have shed human blood;
you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

18 “Of what value is an idol carved by a craftsman?
Or an image that teaches lies?
For the one who makes it trusts in his own creation;
he makes idols that cannot speak.
19 Woe to him who says to wood, ‘Come to life!’
Or to lifeless stone, ‘Wake up!’
Can it give guidance?
It is covered with gold and silver;
there is no breath in it.”

20 The Lord is in his holy temple;
let all the earth be silent before him.

Two Facts

that set the stage

God Provides Clarity

when there seems to be none vs. 2-3
The LORD replies...
Lord Hears our request...

and replies ....To respond verbally or clearly in some other way.....

Personally - Habakkuk gets a call from the LORD's personal cell phone number, not the one on the website

He responds Clearly....

In writing - write it down

make it plain - so there will be no confusion, especially important when you are emotionally sitrred up and often are not able to focus real well

memorable and transferable

someone can take this message and "run with it"

(Make it Stick - quote)

Answer is for an apointed time in the future, which may seem like along way off to us - but to God it will be the proper time for this event of judgement to occur

Which will prove to be true in the end

Until then......wait....even though it will appear to be delayed....(the word linger in the NIV)

Waiting only happens when you trust the person who is asking you to wait, otherwise you take things into your own hands

Destructive Choices

God is aware of them vs. 4-5

God is fully aware of the way evil nations and people act....

1. Puffed up - filled with air so ne appears larger than is actually the case.....

2. Evil desires -opposite of God's best

3. Abuse alcohol

4. Arrogant - feelings of unwarranted importance, or overblown pride

5. Always moving - instead of staying home with the word picture of caring for the house, its conditiopn and appearance - instead running the streets getting into trouble

6. Greedy - a synonym for never satisfied, the need to have one more, grow bigger constantly

7. Never satisfied - you will neve rhear these folks say " that's enough"

God not only knows about these behaviors, he also knows about the negative results of such a package.

Woes

6,9,12,15
Woe - a statement of lament or sadness

(Illus. best book I hav eever read on grief, going through the loss of a loved one or something with a similar impact......)

1. Because you Plundered

you will be plundered vs. 6-8
You will be mocked by those you conquer - eventually - how long is a question thrown into the answer again.....

taunted, ridiculed, scorned

suddenly the tables will be turned and it will be your turn to be surprised and terrified

what you hav ewill be taken from you by force as you have done the same to others....

what goes around comes around,
you reap what you sow......

I remember the verse in Galatians 6:7 especially the KJV

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

2. Plotted Ruin

shame and death vs. 9-11
To gain ground, material good by violent means

To build a so called protected place safe from the very evil you are committing upon others

And planned to visit upon others great calamity and misfortune

You will experience humiliation and disgrace, and nothing will remain hidden, it will seem like the vry rocks you piled up to protect you will will be exposing you and ultimately be the reason for your death

3. Led by Corruption

exhausted and burned out vs. 12-14
Woe - it will end badly for...

those who use murder and evil to build a city or system

they will be fuel for the fire of God's judgment and

ultimately will wear themselves out pursuing the destruction of others without ever reaching their ultimate goals but ending up with nothing, empty, filled with futility and exhausted.......

4.Took Advantage

you will be exposed vs. 15-17
It is not going to end well for you who:

get people drunk and watch their pornographic antics

who take advantage of vulnerable people for entertainment

you will be exchanging the glory of victory with the humiliation of the power of God (his right hand)

and instead of being the tough guy in town you will be once again disgraced and vicitmized by the same evil that you used on others, even animals......

So God's answer to Habakkuk starts with 2 facts about himself, 4 woes about those who rule with viloence and corruption, and now 3 truths about Godly living in the midst of all this.....

Three Truths

to trust in vs. 4,14,20

Live by faith

in the midst of everything vs. 4
Those who align themselves with God's rule of life, allow Him to be the standard....

are a direct contrst to those who reject God - our life is a contrast to the world around us

live -

to do life, as a matter of daily activity

to experience life

to be alive and act like it

to be involved in helping others do the same...

It is not a passive hide in the corner, silently letting evil ahv eits way kind of life, but one that stands in the marketplace in life as a direct contrast to the evil around it

and we do all this not being captivated by social media, but by means of the trust we have in God - faith.....

a solid, steadfast, stable trust in Jahweh Elohim Adonai.....

trust -

God's Glory

will fill every nook and cranny vs. 14
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

FIlled - despite the worlds active efforts to remove God from every area of our lives.....and seem to be making progress on many fronts.....

as Romans one describes those who reject God supress the truth....

knowldege - recognize, acknowledge, and confess the power and the presence of God

Glory - "manifest presence"

- evidence of His presence

- give him credit He deserves as our creator, sanctifier, savior....etc

- that says God is first and deserves the honor and dignity of holding that position in our lives

(Illus. Olympic athlete's giving God the credit....)

as the waters cover the sea....

(Illus. cleaning my fish tank..... and then you refill it, and every corner of that tank is filled with water.......)

GOD is...

vs. 20
1. THe LORD - responds by using His name not a title - illustrating among other things his personal investment in responding to Habakkuk and his people

as well as his investment in the overall plan to judge evil nations and their activities

God is....

present tense

not an interesting historical figure for us to study

nor a great thing to hope in somehwere in the future

but He is our God for today.......

ANd he has not lost track of, nor lost control of anything

So STOP.....

worrying, gossiping, spreadking messages of fear and anxiety

Sit in silence and watch God work.....

hold your tongue, be still, keep quiet

Rest in His faithful plan and live by faith

God's Answer

  • 2 Facts about God
  • 4 Woes that result of evil
  • 3 Truths to trust in
  • An answer for frustration
an answer when you are frustrated with all the evil going on around you....

No wonder Habakkuk's message was so popular during the turbulent years between Malachi and Matthew.....

The knowledge of God’s glory—not the works of the wicked—is destined to fill the earth (v. 14). This means that the wicked will be removed. All the earth is called to worshipful silence before Him. How many times have believers given such testimony to the living God while under the heel of arrogant, tyrannical rulers! Here the tyrant was Nebuchadnezzar. At other times it has been Antiochus-Epiphanes, or Nero, or Hitler, or Stalin. The statement holds true: Through faithful patience the righteous survive. The tyrant inevitably falls (see Isa. 40).

Our clsoing osng is......

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
