A kind of tree bark textile called amatl was used by Pre Hispanic cultures to write their official writings on.
The Aztecs covered this "paper" with melted rubber and painted on it. This was used to decorate religious sculptures, shrines, sacrifice places and burials.
Nowadays, the paper is called papel picado. In Mexico, papel picado has been adopted as a cultural expression. Pictures are cut out of the paper and hung up for decoration.
