PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FRANK HERBERT

BIOGRAPHY

Was determined to become an author since childhood. Wrote a lot of fiction with little to no success while working as a journalist. His parents were alcoholics, he often had to care for his sister, Patty Lou. She was 13 years younger than him. Dropped out of high school in May of his senior year and did some actual reporting. Went back to school and would write articles for the school paper. Eventually moved out with Patty Lou to Oregon to live with their aunt and uncle. He attended the University of Washington where he met Beverly Stuart Forbes who he married. They both wrote fiction books. He eventually died on February 11, 1986 due to pulmonary embolism. But not before writing his successful science-fiction series known as “Dune”

DUNE

Dune is regarded as one of the greatest science-fiction novels of all time. It is a story about a man named Paul Atreides and his journey to his destiny as a messianic leader on the arid desert planet Arrakis. The book has sold almost 20 million copies and translated into more than 20 languages.

SIGNIFICANT QUOTE

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear.” From Dune.

AUTHORS SIGNIFICANCE

He was so significant because his work, Dune, went against every story trend when it came to science fiction. He championed the beginning of a new movement, which was the idea of ecological science fiction.

WHAT I THINK

I think that Frank Herbert is a great author. Considering the fact that the beginning of his work wasn’t working out for him but he never gave up and kept going is very inspiring. I am a big fan of sci-fi books so his Dune series would probably be a great read for me.

WHAT SHOULD BE OUR INITIAL REACTION TO FEAR?

In Frank Herbert’s “Dune”, it tells us that fear is the mind-killer. Instead of fighting it we should face it and allow it pass through us.
