PAGET'S DISEASE

SYMPTOMS

• Most people who have Paget's disease of bone have no symptoms.
• When symptoms occur, the most common complaint is bone pain.
• Because this disease causes your body to generate new bone faster than normal, the rapid remodeling produces bone that's softer and weaker than normal bone, which can lead to bone pain, deformities and fractures

CAUSES

• It is not known what causes Paget's disease.
• Recently, certain genes have been associated with Paget's disease, including the Sequestrosome 1 gene on chromosome 5.
• Virus infection may be necessary to trigger Paget's disease in people who have inherited the genetic tendency to develop the condition by having these genes

TREATMENT

• Osteoporosis medication is usually used
• Examples are Alendronate (Fosamax) Ibandronate (Boniva) Pamidronate (Aredia) Risedronate (Actonel) Zoledronic acid (Zometa, Reclast)
