HO-CHUNK

The Ho-Chunk are a Siouan-speaking people

They were known to the French at Quebec as early as 1616

CULTURE AND BELIEFS HAVE SUSTAINED THE HO-CHUNK NATION FOR CENTURIES

HO-CHUNK CAN BE TRANSLATED INTO EITHER BIG VOICE OR BIG FISH

They originated at Red Banks

They are also related to the Quapaw, Omaha, and Ponca

HISTORY

Ho-Chunk is 1 of the most strongest native American tribes

The tribe consists of about 7,071 members

They were first known as the Wisconsin Winnebago Tribe

They original name is Ho-Chunk or “People of the Big Voice"

The Ho-Chunk were avid hunters, gatherers and farmers

THE HO-CHUNK NATION IS A NON-RESERVATION TRIBE WITH 3,407 ACRES OF TRUST LAND

and 5,310 acres of taxable land

GOVERNMENT

The Ho-Chunk Nation’s first constitution was drafted in 1962

There government is now split up into 4 different sections:

General Council, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial

Sovereign nation

The United States recognizes Indian tribes as sovereign powers

The Ho-Chunk and all other sovereign tribes in the U.S. have a

government-to-government agreement with the federal government

The limits of Indian sovereignty were defined in an 1832
