Resilient

Resilient systems withstand, respond to, and adapt more readily to shocks and stresses to emerge stronger after tough times, and live better in good times.

Inclusive

Inclusive relates to the processes of good governance and effective leadership that ensure investments and actions are appropriate, address the needs of the most vulnerable and collectively create a resilient city – for everyone.

Inclusive processes emphasize the need for broad consultation and ‘many seats at the table’ to create a sense of shared ownership or a joint vision to build city resilience.

Connected

3 Realms of Connectivity

  • Economic connectivity. Linking people, information and finance. It requires strategic investment in infrastructure.
  • Social connectivity. The degree to which citizens identify with their city and are connected to their community.
  • Political connectivity links people and government enabling a network of public, private and civic leadership.

From putting a man on the moon to the creation of the internet, there are examples of radical collaboration where groups have come together to create a future that market actors could not have created alone.

The more demanding the innovation challenge, the greater the need for collaboration.

Collaboration for future cities today must focus on the most pressing problems: from poverty, to education access, to improving health, to environmental degradation - in order to impact lives at a scale.

Examples of radical collaboration

We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.

WHY SHOOT FOR THE MOON?

  • Today we face unprecedented challenges - to meet them we need bold ambition - a social vision that is sufficiently powerful to move people
  • It is not just social entrepreneurs and innovators who must respond - a big vision must galvanise the passions of all actors in a city
