What was the Great Depression?

The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the industry.

When did it occur?

Oral history interview with Edna Y. Hargett. Hargett recalls what it is like for workers during the Great Depression. Hagett describes how the mills typically reduced their hours of operation so that fewer workers would have to be laid off but she kept her job. She recalls that nobody could afford food so most people turned to gardens. She also remembered many people helping each other. She said that when the new deal came things got better and that there was no strike until the 1940’s.
