ORGINS OF HAJJ

  • Was established by Muhammad
  • According to the Quran thought it traces back to Abraham
  • Abraham was commanded to leave Hagar and Ishamel in what is know ancient Mecca

TIMING OF HAJJ

  • The date of hajj is determined by the Islamic calendar which is based on lunar year.
  • Hajj takes place in a five day period, starting on 8 and ending with 12

FIRST DAY OF HAJJ

  • On the duh al-hijjah, the pilgrims are reminded of their duties
  • They don the ihram garments and confirm their attention to make pilgrimage

SECOND DAY OF HAJJ

  • The 9th dhul also-hijjah before noon, pilgrims arrive at Arafat
  • They offer supplications, repent, on and atone for their past sins
  • The listen to Islamic scholars near Jabal al Rahmah were Muhhamad is said to deliver his last sermon

THIR DAY OF HAJJ

  • They spend the night in Mina and perform symbolic stoning of the devil on the 10th dhu al-hijjah
  • They slaughter animals to commemorate the story of Abraham and Ishmael
  • Then they shave or trim their hair men shave their hair and women cut the tips

FOURTH DAY OF HAJJ

  • Starting from noon to sunset on the 11th dhu al-hijjah, again throw seven pebbles at each of the three pillars of Mina

FIFTH DAY OF HAJJ

  • On the 12th dhu al-hijjah the process of the stoning of the pillars takes place
  • Pilgrims may leave Mina for Mecca before sunset on the 12th

LAST DAY OF HAJJ

  • On the dhu al-hijjah they return to Mecca
  • When they leave Mecca they perform a farewell called the tawaf al-wadaa
  • They circle around the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise and if they can attempt or touch or kiss the kabaa
