Barriers to physical activity are common.

Helping clients work through them is essential.

Barrier: Lack of time.

This is the main reason people don't exercise.....

Solution:  Break it up...try 5 or 10 minutes to start

Smaller chunks of activity still have benefits.  Something is still better than nothing.

Barrier: Lack of motivation.

The more we sit, the more we want to. If a client is depressed, physical activity is often reduced.

Solution: Stand up

Encourage clients to stand more.  Too much sitting reduces circulation and increases fats in the blood.

Solution:  Movement is energizing.

Dancing, walking, soccer, basketball, swimming....it doesn't matter.  Just move!

Barrier:  Fear of moving

Chronic pain or other health concerns often prevent people from moving.

Movement reduces chronic pain.

Solution:  Start with activities that don't increase pain.  Physical activity improves health, including pain.

Barrier:  Lack of support

Not knowing what to do, how to do it or having someone to do it with can hold someone back.
