QUAKERS

  • Quakers started at the end of Europe's Protestant Reformation (17th century)
  • Their missionary efforts brought them to North America
  • In America they became involved in Pennsylvania politics and then changed their views on government participation in the mid 1750's
  • They were the first organization to ban slavery within the group
  • Formally known as the Religious Society of Friends
  • Strict policy of no violence

QUAKERS IN GEORGIA

  • In 1768 Joseph Maddock (English Quaker) who was from NC founded Wrightsborough which was a Quaker community in GA
  • The worst thing that happened to the Quakers was the Cotton Gin
  • Their main export crop had been tobacco but now cotton was being produced faster than their tobacco
  • The invention of the cotton gin brought more slaves which they were against
  • They could no longer compete in Georgia's economy
