BIRTH DEFECTS: CLEFT LIP

DESCRIPTION

  • During the 6th to 10th week of pregnancy, the bones and tissues of a baby's upper jaw, nose form the top lip
  • If the tissue in the developing mouth and the palate don't blend together, a baby could be born with a cleft lip

SYMPTOMS:

  • A split in the top lip or roof of the mouth
  • Difficultly swallowing
  • Recurring ear infections

DETECTION:

  • A prenatal ultrasound can sometimes determine if a cleft exists in child

TREATMENT:

  • There is a cleft lip surgery that will put the skin and nose in the proper place
