POPE JOHN XXIII: BIOGRAPHY

  • Joined Italy in the war in 1915 and became a sergent medic
  • Named Archbishop and represented the pope in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey

JOHN XXIII: PAPAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Called for the Second Vatican Council
  • Elected twenty-three new cardinals
  • Improved communication with other religious denominations (Muslim, Protestant, Etc.)

John XXIII: Significance to Church

  • Began Vatican II that crucially developed the Modernization of the Church
  • Renewed the liturgy and put emphasis on Sacred Scripture
  • Stressed that lay people are equal members of the Church
  • Encouraged the acknowledgement of God's presence beyond the Church
  • Told people to accept the world as the world is perceived

JOHN XXIII: GIFTS OF HOLY SPIRIT

  • Fortitude: Showed courage in calling Vatican II despite popular opinion not to
  • Knowledge: Properly reformed the neccessary changes during Vatican II
  • Piety: John XXIII had confidence in God that Vatican II would be a success

POPE JOHN PAUL II: BIOGRAPHY

  • Born Karol Wojtyla on May 18th 1920
  • He was appointed as Archbishop of Krakow (1964) and created a Cardinal (1967)
  • Elected Pope on in 1978 and became the univeral Pastor of the Church

JOHN PAUL II: PAPAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • First non-Italian pope in several centuries
  • Most traveled pope ever (125 foreign countries)
  • Created World Youth Day and stressed Human Rights
  • Canonized and Beatified more saints than his predecessors of 500 years combined

John Paul II: Significance to Church

  • Wrote many encyclicals to help teach and encourage change in the Church
  • Vocally stressed the importance of responding to modernization in speeches
  • Supported the use of media for the papacy to help spread Christianity
  • Improved the Catholic image and inspired young people during his journeys

JOHN PAUL II: GIFTS OF HOLY SPIRIT

  • Understanding: Comprehension of several lanugages to communicate with the world
  • Counsel: Eventually understood the life that God intended after working many jobs
  • Piety: Confidence that God will allow him to spread the Word around the world

  • Modernized Church with good attitude towards homosexuality
  • Lives in his apartment when he was chosen during the Conclave
  • Encouraged helping the sick and poor

Pope Francis: Gifts of Holy Spirit

  • Wisdom: Shows his wisdom through his speeches about the sick and poor
  • Wonder and Awe: Expresses his respect for God and encourages others too
  • Counsel: Francis lets God make the decisions in his life
