ANNEXATION OF HAWAII 1893

  • America was eager to claim new land
  • American marines stormed the islands
  • They palnted the Stars and Stripes in honolulu

MAINE EXPLOSION 1898

  • The Maine was sent to protect the US during a cuban revolt
  • It unexpectedly blew up, without a clear cause
  • 260 out of 350 people died

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR 1898

  • The war was caused by the Maine blowing up
  • The war was ended by the Treaty of Paris

OPEN DOOR POLICY 1899-1900

  • Created due to American buisnesses trading with Chinese Markets
  • It is used to relieve competing interests of the colonial powers
  • Allows any country to get into another countries port freely

BOXER REBELLION 1899-1901

  • It was an attempt to drive all foreigners from China
  • The term "Boxers" was used for the secret society of the Yihequan
  • On August 14, 1900, an international force finally captured Beijing

FORAKER ACT 1900

  • passed to establish the governing structure for Puerto Rico.
  • The executive branch was allowed only two members appointed by the president
  • A special reduced tax was used on goods being transported between the US and Puerto Rico

SQUARE DEAL1901

  • Control of corporations, conservation of natural resources, and consumer protection
  • Helped middle class people and protected businesses from extreme labor

PANAMANIAN REBELLION AGAINST COLOMBIA 1903

  • Columbia faced the province of Panama's desire to want a canal that connected them to the country
  • In 1903, the senate from Columbia rejected a treaty that gave the U.S. control over a canal
  • The new government signed a treaty allowing them to build the Panama Canal

PLATT AMENDMENT 1903

  • Created to end the United States military occupation of Cuba which began during the Spanish American War
  • The Platt amendment had eight conditions

ROOSEVELT COROLLARY 1904

  • Roosevelt's approach to the Caribbean was recognized as the "big stick"
  • U.S would use a last resort to make sure the nations in the Western Hemisphere would reach their obligations

RUSO-JAPANESE WAR 1904-05

  • It was a conflict between Russia and Japan
  • Russia rejected Japan's plan to divide Manchuria and Korea in to spheres of influence
  • It lead Japan to attack Russia

"GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT" 1907

  • An informal agreement between the Empire of Japan and the United States
  • The United States could no longer impose restriction on Japanese Immigration.
  • The ultimate goal was to reduce tension between the US and Japan

GREAT WHITE FLEET 1907-09

  • United States Navy battle ship that completed a navigation around the globe
  • The Great White Fleet consisted of 16 white ships that were sent out to show the nation's naval power

MEXICAN REVOLUTION 1910

  • The Mexican Revolution began in 1910 and ended dictatorship in Mexico
  • Began because Francisco Ignacio Madero Gonzalez overthrew Porfirio Diaz

COMPLETION OF PANAMA CANAL 1914

  • Was the biggest construction ever taken at the Canal
  • It was completed in 1914 and now symbolizes the United States Technological Processes and economic power
