  • Chuck Berry was born to a middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri in 1926
  • St. Louis at the time was another hub of musical activity
  • After graduating from high school, he spent three years in jail for armed robbery
  • He married and settled down after being released, but there was still a recklessness in him

Chuck berry (cont.)

  • Berry found an outlet for his creative frustration - and a way to satisfy his desire for attetion - in the electric guitar
  • He began playing with another local blues musician named T-Bone Walker
  • In 1955 (the same year that Bo Diddley's first record was released), Berry hit the road with his band and had his first encounter with Diddley and the man who would change both of their lives

Social Legacy

  • Rock & Roll was a craze that swept the nation and was loved by those of all races
  • At raucous performances, concert organizers were at times unable to enforce the boundary of segregation, and the music became a main factor in bringing the segregated dance hall to an end

cultural appropriation

Appropriation

  • One of the reasons that rock and roll became as popular as it did was that young, clean cut white men began playing it
  • Remember the earlier video of Bo Diddley?
  • It showcased his most lasting and influential contribution to the world of popular music: The "Bo Diddley Beat"
