PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SCOLIOSIS

In my presentation today, I will be covering scoliosis

OVERVIEW

Scoliosis is the sideways curvature of the spine and is typically first developed before the growth spurt that occurs in puberty, Scoliosis is more common in girls. There are upwards of 3 million cases in the United States a year.

BODY SYSTEM AFFECTED

Scoliosis affects the skeletal system as it takes place in your spine. It also affects the nervous system as it pinches your nerves. Finally, it can affect your respiratory system in severe cases when your ribs are pushed against your lungs, which can cause shortness of breath.

SYMPTOMS

Some symptoms of scoliosis include having uneven shoulders and having one hip that is raised higher than the other. These symptoms are due to the spine being curved which can contort the body.

CAUSES

Scoliosis can be caused by cerebral palsy, tumors, inequal limb length, birth defects affecting the spine, muscle spasms, and spine injuries or infections.

DIAGNOSIS

Scoliosis is typically diagnosed by a X-ray, but if a tumor might be causing the condition, patients will most likely have to have an MRI.

TREATMENT

Scoliosis can be treated by surgery, braces, and therapy but theses cures can be determined by the severity of the condition. “€œSince scoliosis is defined as a lateral deviation of the spine exceeding 10 degrees, a cure is considered to be any treatment that is able to reduce scoliosis to under 10 degrees.” - scoliosiscarecenters.com

PROGNOSIS

The prognosis for scoliosis depends whether you have mild, moderate, or severe scoliosis. The prognosis for mild scoliosis is good as it does not affect your internal organs, there is not conclusive research about moderate scoliosis, and severe scoliosis is bad as it pushes your ribs up against your lungs.

PREVENTION

There is not a prevention for some conditions, but some can be caused by bad posture. You can prevent further progression with “€œbrain-muscle retraining and nutritional support”€ - treatingscoliosis.com
