PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Location:
Ancient Egypt was located along the Nile river. This was located towards northeast Africa.
Mummification:
The mummification process is long. First, they cut open the body and removed all the organs except for the heart and stored them in special jars. Next, they use a special substance to dry out the body and later applied some special oils. Then they wrapped the body in linen cloth and bandages and often placed special charms inside the cloth. Last, the place the body in a coffin that was called a sarcophagus. They did this long process just because they believe in afterlife.
Pyramids:
Because Egyptians believed in the afterlife, they also believed that they should be put in royal tombs or burial sites. The most spectacular burial sites were the pyramids. They were huge stone tombs woth four triangle shaped side that met in a point at the top. So basically a 3D triangle. They built the first pyramids in the Old kingdom. Most of the largest pyramids were built at that time. Most of the pyramids are still standing today. The largest pyramid took thousands of workers and more than 2 million limestone blocks. The early pyramids did not have smooth sides. They finally figured out a way to make smooth sided pyramids that would stay standing. All pyramids have mummies in them awaiting to come back to life.
The Great Sphinx:
The Great Sphinx is a giant statue that was carved out of rock and left to guard Khafre's tomb. This has a head of a pharaoh and a body of a lion. This was set down by the pyramids because that is where Khafre's tomb was.
King Tutankhamun:
King Tutankhamun, King Tut, was born in 1341 BC and died in 1323 BC. His original name was Tutankhaten but he changed it after his father died. King Tut is known for his golden tomb. They found his tomb in 1922 which wasn't even 100 years ago! Scientists don't know whether he died from natural causes or murder. Scientists are 90% sure that in the place where Tutankhamun's tomb his, that there is a secret chamber containing Nefertitti's tomb in it but get to it the have to destroy the wall. The wall tells them many things about ancient Egyot but what is behind the wall might also.
Osiris:
Osiris was the God of the dead and the ruler of the underworld. He was married to his sister Isis. He was murdered by his evil brother Seth but Isis brought him back to life to have a son. They named him Horus and he revenged his fathers death and killed his uncle. Osiris is also known as the God of vegitation. To represent new growth and renewal, he was often painted with green skin.
Isis:
Isis is the Goddess of magic. She was one of the earliest, yet important, goddesses. She was the sister and the wife of Osiris. Bringing Osiris back to life she introduced resurrection that was profounded in other religions as well, incliding Christianity. She was a waman that portrayed Ankh in her hand and also sometimes even a female body, a cow's head, or cow's horns that where also worshiped as goddess of fertility.
Horus:
Horus was a sky god and the god of the pharaohs. He was also known as the living Horus or the eye of Horus. He was the son of Isis and Osiris. When Osiris was killed by his brother, which whas Horus's uncle, Horus got revenge and killed his uncle Seth. He was established new King of Egypt. He was also worshipped as the God of light and sky. He was usually drawn as a falcon head, male body, and wore a white and red crown. He was one of the most important God's in ancient Egypt.
Rosetta Stone:
It was carved in 196 BC and found in 1799. The Rosetta Stone is a stone with carving of hieroglyphics of the alphabet. This was a key of ancient Egypt and helped understand a lot.
Queen Hatshepsut:
She was born in 1508 BC and died in 1458 BC. She was the longest reigning women Egyptian pharaoh. She reigned as queen for 20 years in the 15th century. She was very famous and was married to Thutmose ll. Her stepson was Thutmose lll. When Hatshepsut died, Thutmose lll erased her inscriptions and tried to eradicate her memory.
Queen Nefertiti:
She was born in 1370 BCE and died 1330 BCE. She was a pharaoh and reigned alongside her husband Pharaoh Akhenaten. She and her husband established the sun God. She is a mystery because some theories state that she was born in a foreign country, possibly Syria. They do know that 1330 BCE, she disappeared and was never seen again. Scientists today are 90% sure that her tomb is behind the wall of Tutankhamuns building where his tomb is located. The only way to get to it is to destroy the wall but the wall was very important to ancient Egyptians and will destroy a lot of key items of Egypt.
The Great Pyramid:
The Great Pyramid is the biggest pyramid ever built. It contains over 2.3 million stone and weighs about 2.5 to 15 tons per stone. The pyramid contains three burial chambers and was made in ancient Egypt.
Papyrus:
Papyrus is a type of plant that Egyptians use to make paper. When the paper is made, scribes write on it using pen and ink. The papyrus is a good paper like material and that is why it is used for paper. It is not to thick nor to thin so it is perfect to make paper.
Hieroglyphics:
Hieroglyphics are the key to ancient Egypt. They told a lot. Hieroglyphics were the ancient Egyptian alphabet. Every symbol meant a different letter and the Rosetta Stone contained the hieroglyphics alphabet.
Old Kingdom:
In 2700 BC a new dynasty came along known as the Old Kingdom. It was often called the Old Kingdom or the third dynasty. It was a period in ancient Egypt history that lasted from about 2700 to 2200 BC. During the Old Kingdom, Egyptians developed their political system. The most famous pharaoh of the Old Kingdom was Khufu. By the end of the Old Kingdom, Egypt had about 2 million people.
Middle Kingdom:
At the end of the Old Kingdom, the population became smaller and people started to leave and that started the Middle Kingdom. It lasted from 2050 to - 1750 BC. During the period after the Old Kingdom and before the Middle Kingdom the kindom had no central ruler. Finally around 2050 BC, a powerful pharaoh got things straight and started the Middle Kingdom. By the end of the Middle Kingdom, things started to go down hill again.
New Kingdom:
The New Kingdom occured from 1550 to 1050 BC. This is when Egypt reached its power and glory. During this, pharaohs got conquest and trade which made then wealthy. After the New Kingdom ancient Egypt fell in violence and disorder and would never regain its power again.
Social Structure:
Social Structure, Social Pyramid, is what class people in ancient Egypt were in. The top of the pyramid was the King and he ruled everyone. Then come the nobles and priests and they are the second most important people. Next were the craftsmen, merchants, and scribes and they were wealthy. Then, there are the farmers and unskilled workers and they aren't bad but they aren't good. On the bottom of the pyramid is the slaves. They are the worst and are poor. So, in total, there are 5 layers.
