UVA, UVB, and UVC

  • UVC is stopped by our atmosphere
  • UVB is stopped in the surface layers of skin
  • UVA penetrates to the deeper layers of the skin

Summary of Methods

  • UVA and UVB sensors from Vernier
  • Data points are automatically taken every 4 seconds
  • ~40 seconds per trial, per item, averaged = that day's UV block
  • All days data points averaged together

Hypothesis 1

Higher SPF will block more UV than lower SPF

Darker fabrics will block more UV

Hypothesis 3

More expensive eye protection blocks more UV

Conclusions

  • Wear sun protection!
  • Sunblock application matters more than SPF
  • Type of material matters more than color
  • The darker the lenses, the more effective the sunglasses
