The peregrine falcon lives on every continent except for Antarctica. They prefer to be near coasts so they can hunt other shorebirds.

The peregrine falcon can live in a number of different ecosystems. They prefer costal zones but have been found in desserts, grasslands and even tundras.

The peregrine falcon is at the top of its food chain. They hunt other birds and bats. They are migratory birds that can travel up to 1500 miles per year.

SURVIVAL

  • The birds require a constant supply of birds and bats to eat.
  • Trees or other tall sturdy objects to make their nests.

CHALLENGES TO SURVIVAL

  • One of the birds main problems was the use of DDT Pesticides that would enter the birds system and kill it
  • Falconers, or people who illegally obtain the birds for sport but do not care for them properly

FUN FACTS

  • The peregrine falcon is the fastest member of the animal kingdom
  • It can reach speeds from 200-245 miles per hour
  • It is found on 6 of the 7 continents
  • It has a special notch in its upper beak that is used to sever the spinal cord while hunting
  • It has special bones in its nose that divert some air away from the lungs while it is going into dives
