Definition of Cognitive Bias:
“It is a systematic pattern of deviation from norm or rationality in judgement.”

Example Of
Confirmation Bias:
Blocking, Muting and Ignoring posts on Facebook that doesn’t affirm our beliefs

Definition of Implicit Bias:
“Refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding , actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.”

Example of implicit Bias:
People rationalizing who they vote for based on “a feeling”, without digging into deeper issues

Instead if spending time getting more information, people will rationalize their initial thoughts. There is “just something” that the voter doesn’t like about Clinton or Trump, without going into substantive issues. This is most likely because they are relying on implicit bias.

RELATION TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

  • “Subject Social Reality”
  • Recognizing Biases
  • How we engage
  • Admitting Defeat
Creating a “subject social reality” may cause ideas and perceptions to differ, and in turn this could lead to conflict. Being able to understand and recognize our own personal biases can help foster better relationships by realizing where our own faults may lie and overcoming them.

It tends to distort our thinking, influence our beliefs and sway the way we make decisions in life. It also affects the way we engage in conflict because it helps us decide what we believe is worth arguing about. Having those biases also affects our ability to “admit defeat” or allow others to sway our previously held belief.

RELATION TO CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

  • Subconscious belief
  • Questions ideas
  • Overcoming barriers
This form of bias can lead to conflict subconsciously. When individuals don’t question the basis of their ideas or perceptions, conflicts may arise. Questioning our own thoughts and generalizations can be an important step in overcoming barriers.
