My third quarter novel is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

WHY IS INDEPENDENT THINKING WORTH FIGHTING FOR?
My essential question is: “Why is independent thinking worth fighting for?”. In response to this query, I discovered an online book source titled More Time to Think: The Power of Independent Thinking, by Nancy Kline. Within this novel, she discusses how thinking effects and defines each of us.

Kline writes, “The quality of everything human beings do - everything- everything depends on the quality of thinking we do first” (Kline 3). As humans, thinking is necessary for absolutely everything we do all of our lives. From the smallest action of picking up an object to figuring out the hardest math equation, our brains are constantly in use and thinking. We are able to create and revise our actions through independent thinking. The quality of the actions we take and ideas we pursue to improve lives come from the ability to think for ourselves.

Our thinking is also what helps defines us as individuals and help other develop. Advanced ideas to help improve or create come from independent thinking and being inspired by others’ independent and unique works. Kline writes, “If we behave in ten particular ways, people around us will think for themselves, often brilliantly” (Kline 4). Independent thinking is an asset towards not only the development of society but the development of our fellow humans.
