THE ELECTION OF 1860

  • Lincoln-Douglas debates
  • Lincoln's election defied peaceful resolutions
  • Appealed to nationalist themes.
  • "The last best hope"
  • North and south now viewed each other as enemies, this issue was due to slavery

AFTER LINCOLN'S ELECTION

  • 7 lower southern states seceded
  • Formed the confederate states of America
  • Counted on unionist to keep the upper south states from seceding.
  • Believed slavery had to become a crisis before it could be solved.

DURING THE CIVIL WAR

  • Lincoln risked his life fulfilling his duties as commander.
  • Violated civil war liberties.
  • Proclaimed all slaves in rebellion states are forever free.
  • On April 14, 1865 John Wilkes booth shot Lincoln in the back on the head.
