Introduction of Authors:
The article “Negro’s ‘Double Consciousness’ in To Kill a Mockingbird” discusses African Americans’ life under the impact of racism. The three authors, Faeze Rezazade, Esmaeil Zohdi, and Sohila Faghfori, work at Vali-e-Asr University as assistant professors of English literature. They come from a Persian background however have translated many books from Persian to English. Many of their other works not only discuss film and literary reviews, but also racism in the world today which is the main focus in this article.

“Double consciousness” concept:
The main point in the article is the concept of a “double consciousness.” This concept is specifically described as being a “sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others” (Rezazade et. al 8). With this knowledge of two cultures, a person grows two identities and two perceptions of society and how it works. A person with this awareness can face discrimination, prejudice, and ultimately racism. Society’s reason for this treatment is lack of knowledge that a person has, therefore, the action taken place is to put that person down in order to prevent a threat to society.

Relation to the novel:
The authors of the article use the example of Calpurnia in To Kill a Mockingbird to exemplify the “double consciousness” concept. Calpurnia, an African American woman, is the mother figure for two white children. In the novel, it is clear that she lives a double life due to being at work in a white society, then returning home to her African American society. She has two perspectives from these two societies, thus resulting in segregation. Readers can read that Calpurnia receives racism due to her skin color from White society and ridicule for working for White people from African American society. Separated from both societies, Calpurnia lives behind a dual-hidden identity blending into the two societal groups.

Personal Application:
I am personally blessed to be going to a Christ-centered school with diversity. Everyone knows each other and different people from different backgrounds get along very well. This, however, should not just happen at my school but in society in general. Although society is slowly progressing towards diversity and harmony, it is no where near to where it should be. John 13:34 says, “A new command I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” People only have each other, so we must not fight against each other, we need to love and respect one another. If people make an effort to branch out towards new people, there would be less negativity from prejudice and racism.
