  • A poem is a type of literature that attempts to stir a reader's imagination or emotions
  • The poet does this by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.

Something Inspires the only cow of late
To make no more of a wall than an open gate

First memory of swimming underwater:
eggs of frogs hanging in diaphanous clumps
from green lily pad stems;
at night in the tent I heard
the father of it all booming and croaking in the reeds.

Free verse does not rhyme or have a designed structure, yet it still brings out more emotion in the reader than prose does.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, so paper thin
Like a house of cards,
one blow from caving in?

A simile is something that compares something to another thing. Most of the time they use "like" or "as".

A year is
A 365 day journey
A long event
A book of friends
A roller coaster ride through time
But once a year on 6/29
It's my day of fame--
Hooray!

A metaphor is a poetic comparison in which one thing is said to be another thing.

WEEDS
There are laws in the village against weeds.
The law says a weed is wrong and shall be killed.
The weeds say life is a white and lovely thing
And the weeds come on and on in irrepressible regiments.

Personification: The giving of human or lifelike characteristics to an inanimate object or an animal.

Blandeers' birthplaces are Baltimore, Baghdad, Belize and Bangkok.
Blandeers bite bagels, biscuits, burgers and bacon.
Blandeers like to bamboozle baseballs like they are rockets, bike, drive Bugatti's , and read books.
Blandeers have big biceps, blandeers look like a bazooka because they have so many biceps, blandeers sport a bison brown blanket.
Once a blandeer booked a bus to the Bahamas for a boondoggle.

The three poetic devices that I used were
Similes
Metaphor
Alliteration
