SEPERATE-BUT-EQUAL

  • 1856
  • Ruling established in supreme court case of Plessy V Ferguson,
  • allowing for segregated public facilities as long as they are equal.
  • Its important because it helped estabisged some rights for the
  • African Americans.

FREEDOM RIDERS

  • May 14, 1947
  • Group made up of African American and white teams who traveled
  • to south to draw attention to segregated bus terminals. Angry Whites
  • often attacked them.
  • This event is important, because some whites and African Americans joined together to end segregation.

BROWN V BOARD OF EDUCATION

  • May 17, 1954
  • This program was made to let African Americans have some education
  • just like the whites did and even took them to the same schools later on.
  • This is important because it got people attention, and let the african american kids and teens
  • get more better education.

MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT

  • December 1, 1955
  • This was a group of African Americans that joined together to protest without
  • violence to the government. This started when Rosa Parks refused to move from her seat
  • at the bus stations where whites sat.
  • This is important because it was a group of africans that stood up for rights without violence.

SIT-INS

  • Febuary 1,1960
  • Sit-ins started and this was when African Americans whent to sit at local theatres,
  • restaurants, movies and different places where whites usually went and wouldnt leave until they got
  • attended. This got alot of people to join in. Usually they got beaten but they resfused to react and stayed.
  • This is important because it got the whites attention how they never backed down and they didnt use violence.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON

  • August 28,1963
  • This March was a group of African Americans and MLK to Washington and
  • where MLK gave his famous speech.
  • This is important, because MLK's speech was an important and very inspiring speech to many people.

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

  • 1964
  • This act gave African Americans the same rights as everybody else. They got provlidged
  • to more things. But this didnt change the attitudes of the whites.
  • This is important because it gave more rights for African Americans, which made things better for them.

SELMA MARCH

  • March 25,1965
  • This was where MLK led a march for voting rights ,from Alabama to Montgomery. He also
  • got arrested this day at the march for helping lead the African Americans in this march.
  • This was important because it led to new voting rights for African Americans.

WATTS RIOT

  • August 11, 1965
  • Violence that broke out in los angeles against police in an African
  • American neighborhood.
  • It is important because it wasnt a right event to happen and got peoples attention.

CEEO

  • Created by JFK , it tried to stop the federal bureaucracy from discriminating
  • African Americans in hiring and promotions.
  • This was an important event, because it created more job opertunities.
