WHAT IS A KOALA BEAR?

  • The Koala Bear is not a bear and
  • is actually a part of the marsupial family
  • Koalas are Vertebrates
  • Koalas are Mammals

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Thick coat of white and gray fur
  • Big nose
  • About 20 pounds
  • Looks similar to a bear in some aspects

HABITAT

  • Koala bears are found in East Australia
  • They live in eucalyptus trees
  • Stay within a single area for most of thier
  • lives called a "home range"
  • Do not set up dens or homes

BEHAVIOR

  • Move from tree to tree
  • Spend 19 hours a day sleeping
  • Eat for the rest of the day
  • Mark their territory with a scent
  • secreting spot on their chests

FOOD

  • Only eat Eucalyptus leaves
  • Eat 2 pounds a day
  • Store them in their cheeks and pouches
  • Eat so many that they
  • smell like cough drops

ADAPTATIONS

  • Sharps laws to grip trees
  • Very good sense of smell
  • which they use to find the best leaves
  • Muscular
  • Good at climbing

REPRODUCTION

  • Mating season is from September to March
  • Pregnancy of females lasts 35 days
  • Baby continues to develop in the Mothers pouch
