INTRODUCTION

  • The British over taxed the colonists after the French and Indian war
  • The colonists did not like this and protested and had boycotts
  • The called it "Taxation without Representation"
  • The colonists were infuriated with it and wanted to sever ties with the British
  • Lots of battles were fought in the south because of the large amount of loyalist
  • The revolutions battles in South Carolina took place in 1775-1782

BATTLES IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR

  • In the battle of Camden the men were weak because they traveled through a swamp
  • Locals advised general Horatio Gates to take the troops through rich farmlands, but he denied the advise and had a crushing defeat
  • The British troops surrounded the town on land while ships fired at the town from sea
  • Charles town was important because it was a major port

GUERRILLA WARFARE

  • Guerrilla warfare is a hit and run tactic
  • It frustrated the British because they used the land to their advantage
  • Francis Marion used this strategy which gave him the name "swamp fox" for his vast knowledge of the land around him
  • Militia troops used this strategy against the British
  • Thomas Sumter "Gamecock" was a partisan fighter who used guerrilla warfare

MORE BATTLES IN SOUTH CAROLINA

  • The battle of kings mountain was a fight of only loyalists and patriots
  • The continental army mistook a retreat order in the fight, so when the British charged the patriots turned and shot at point blank
  • In the battle of Guilfords Courthouse the British lost a significant amount of troops in the fight.
  • After the battle general Cornwallis quit his campaign for South Carolina and that led to Yorktown, one of the last battles in the war
  • Patrick Ferguson led the loyalists in Kings mountain
  • Andrew Pickens played a important role in the Battle of Cowpens

SUMMARY

  • In the war the British stopped their campaign for the middle colonies to move to the south
  • Many large battles led to significant battles such as York town
  • Because there was a high population of loyalists is one reason that a lot of the fighting took place
  • The southern campaign left a deep wound in the number of British troops
  • It also promoted people like Nathanael Greene to command the patriots in the south
