SETTLERS

  • Settlers moved to the forest for farming and space
  • Moving to rainforest to find farmland to harvest crops and sell to get out of poverty
  • Some sell trees in the black market because it is illegal in many countries
  • They use fire and wood cutting tools to get rid of trees and clear land to make room for new farms
  • Most of the wood is wasted

LOGGERS

  • Loggers cut down trees to make lumber and furniture
  • Cutting down trees helps paper mills and furniture companies sell
  • Logging helps the Brazilian economy by creating more jobs in the forest
  • Logging is a large part of deforestation
  • Loggers cut down mostly mahogany wood, which is very popular

NATIVE AMAZONIANS

  • Use plants and animals for medicine and hunting
  • They fight to save parts of the rainforest
  • Living space being taken by loggers and farmers
  • Lived in the rainforest for centuries
  • 140,000 left out of 1,000,000

RUBBER TAPPERS

  • Take sap from rubber trees to make rubber products
  • Does not harm any of the trees
  • They cut diagonal strips in the bark to not harm the trees
  • Must own trees in order to take sap
  • Must buy large amounts of land
