THE SOUTH WINNING A BATTLE IN THE NORTH....

  • Relieve Virginia from war
  • Strengthen the "Peace Democrats" in the North
  • Lessen Lincoln's chances for reelection
  • Revive the hope for the South to gain foreign support
  • May even lead to peace

THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

  • Lee heads North
  • Union troops moving North-following Lee
  • Confederates-heard there were shoes in Gettysburg
  • A Union Calvary-met Confederates in Gettysburg
  • Confederates (more men)-made the Union retreat

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT...

  • Lee-ordered his men to take 2 surrounding hills
  • More Union troops arrived & stopped the Confederates
  • This saved the Union
  • Lee-ordered his men to attack Cemetery Ridge
  • The Confederates list the battle

AFTER THE UNION VICTORY...

  • Confederates didn't achieve their decisive victory
  • 1/3 of the Confederate Army died
  • Lee resigned (Davis refused to accept it)
  • The South-would never gain foreign help
  • The South is falling toward defeat (end of Lee's offenses)
