The Battle of Fort Sumter
Took place in Charleston County, South Carolina during April 12-14, 1861. Union forces were led by Major Anderson and Confederate were led by the Provisional Forces. The attack on the fort was the first battle in American Civil War, and was the bombardment and surrender of Fort Sumter that started the American Civil War.
First Battle of Bull Run
Took place at Virginia in July 22, 1861. The Union were led by McDowell and the Confederate were led by Beauregard. The Union loss resulted in George B. McClellan being appointed to the Union Army. Victory for the Confederate forces. 5,000 men died and of those 3,000 of them were Union soldiers.
Battle of Shiloh
Took place in Tennessee during April 6-7, 1862. The Union were led by General Ulysses S. Grant and the confederate were led by Albert Sidney Johnston. Battle began when Confederate launched a surprise attack on Union forces under General Grant. Union victory gave Tennessee to the North.
Battle of Antitam
Took place in Shapsburg Maryland, during September 17, 1862. It was the Confederate vs Union. It ended the Confederate army of the Northern Virginias first invasion into the North and elf to Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the preliminary emancipation proclamation.
Battle of Chancellorsville
The battle of Chancellorsville lasted from April 30 to May 6, 1863. Major General Joseph Hoolcer organized an army and attacked Lee's flank. That same flank attacked the union corps. Overall on May 3, 1863 General Lee won the battle, this was considered to be one of the greatest battles.
Battle of Gettysburg
Took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and lasted from July 1-3, 1863. On July 1 the Confederates drove the Union through Gettysburg to a location called Cemetery Hill. On July 2 the Confederates and the Union fought at Devis Den, little round top, the wheatfield, peach orchard, and east cemetery hill. On July 3rd fighting continued at Culps Hill and the Union regained lost ground.
Sherman's March
Sherman's march lasted from November 15- December 21, 1864. During this time Sherman's army marched from Atlanta to savannah, Georgia leaving nothing but devestation. On their journey they stole food, livestock and they burned down the confederates houses.
Robert E. Lee
An American career military officer is best known for having commanded the confederate army of northern Virginia in the American civil war.
Abraham Lincoln
He led the United States through its Civil War. He abolished slavery and strengthened the national government and modernized the economy. Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States from March 1861 till April 1865.
Jefferson Davis
A United States solider and statesman, and was the president of the Confederate states of America during the entire Civil War which was fought from 1861 to 1865.
Emancipation Proclamation
An executive order by president Abraham Lincoln, it proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the ten states that were still in rebellion.
Stonewall Jackson
He was a Confederate general during the American Civil War, and one of the best known Confederate ate commands after General Robert E. Lee.
Ulysses S. Grant
The 18th president of the United States following his success as military commander in the American Civil War.
Surrender at Appomattox Court House
Fought on the morning of April 9, 1865, was the final engagement of Confederate States Army a General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia before it surrendered to the Union Army under Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, and of the last battles of the American Civil War.
North advantages
- Had almost 4 times as many free citizens
- Had many people to grow food and to work in the factories making supplies
- Had more than 70% of the nations railroad lines
- Had a strong navy and a large fleet of private trading ships
North disadvantages
- Northern soldiers had to conquer a huge area to bring the South back into the Union
- They were invading unfamiliar land
- Were fighting an aggressive war, it is much more difficult to invade than it is to defend
South advantages
- Defending their homeland gave them a strong reason to fight
- Had skills that made them good soldiers
- Many of the best officers in the United States were from the South
South disadvantages
- Had few factories to produce weapons, railroad tracks, and other supplies
-Had few railroads to move troops and vital supplies
-The South had a small population, about 9 million lived in the Confederacy and 22 million in the Union
- More than 1/3rd of the population was enslaved; therefore they had fewer people that could be soldiers
