1 Corinthians 11:23-30

31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.

For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.

But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.

What it's called

  • Lord's Supper
  • Table of the Lord
  • Eucharist
  • Breaking of Bread
  • A Remembrance
Lord's Supper - 1 Cor 11:20

Table of the Lord - 1 Cor 10:21

Communion, Holy Communion - empasizing getting together, Acts 2:42ff, 1 Cor 11:17-18

Breaking of Bread - Acts 2:42,46, 20:7, 1 Cor 10:16

A Remembrance - to review the details, facts, is the meaning of the word remebrance -

A way to keep from forgetting

What are the parts?

  • Bread
  • Fruit of the vine
  • A little eating
  • A little drinking
  • "Whenever"
  • Those in the faith - believers
Bread - probably unleavened since it was passover, but e are not told exactly

Fruit of the vine - wine or grapejuice.....probably wine, but the text gives us some wiggle room - literally means the end product of what grape vines produce - juice first and then can become wine....

fo reasons that relate to alcohol consumption we avoid the fermented wine

not the time to come expecting a full meal - do that at home, 1 Cor 11:33-34

For believers - not unbelievers

Whenever - NIV
As oft as you drink it KJV
As often as you drink it - NASB

Proclamation

share loud and wide
Lord's Supper to be done as publicly as possible

proclaim - the word used for preaching the Word of God, the life of Jesus

to broadcast far and wide - for us today, it would mean having a service go viral

What is the message?

1 Corinthians 15:1-8 - great summary of the gospel....

a message that has an end date.....until Jesus comes

Examination

let's have a look
Examine - to test, authenitcate, verify that one is in the faith, inside Jesus, part of the New Covenant relationship mentioned in the passage

Example In Rom 16:10 - Greet Apelles, the approved in Christ. Greet those who are of the household of Aristobulus.

Believers only - not church members, we celebrate open communion and why we fence the table each time we celebrate

Discernment - distinguish whether they are believers, or need to become a believer

Have already taken advantage of the reason Jesus body was broken and his blood was spilled for our sins.....

To avoid sickness and death - don't make a mockery of the death of Jesus by claiming you have taken advantage of his sacrifice and then make fun of it by having unconfessed sin in your life and partaking anyway.....

Celebration

give thanks
To give thanks, Jesus is described during his insitution of the Lord's Supper twice giving thanks.....for the bread and the cup

To be thankful

To be joyous

To be graceful

To enjoy an extension of God's grace and therefore be thankful

One way to describe the outcome of celebrating communion

Think of the scene in the passion of the Christ where they drive the nails into Jesus hand and the blood runs out ......for me....I think of that scene every time I pour the cup....and is why I do it this way......to remember.....

The scene was too graphic for me to play in the service....

The Lord’s Supper serves as not only a vivid memorial of Jesus’ bodily sacrifice and shed blood, but also as a proclamation of his death until he returns. It symbolizes the believer’s union with Christ and the spiritual unity shared by every believer.

It provides a powerful inducement to self-examination, should be celebrated joyfully and regularly, and is open to all who are followers of Christ.

Saying it another way

  • It's a look back
  • It's a look into the now
  • It's a look into later
  • And it's all GRACE
