REASONS WHY

  • The crates ensure that the piglets will get the proper nutrients at all times.
  • Piglets are less likely to get trampled by the mother.
  • The crates reduce aggression between pregnant sows.
  • Improves farmers ability to manage the pigs individually.

WHY ARE THEY USED

  • Crates have been used to reduce the number of pigs which are accidentally laid or stepped on.
  • They have a cooler area for the sow and a warmer area for the young pigs
  • The floors are designed to keep the pigs dry which reduces the risk of spreading diseases
  • Also it gives the pork producers the ability to assist the sow during the birth process of the pigs.

HISTORY OF CRATES

  • They were commonly used in the 1980s
  • Sows are kept in crates 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days.
  • 60-70% of the U.S. Use gestation crates.
  • Over 40 states use gestation crates
