They appeal to teens because they provide instant community, instant celebrity, and encompass so many of the online tools and entertainment activities that teens know and love. Kids can be victims of their own inexperience with new technology. "Think before you post, because once you do, it's going to be up there forever," Shehan says.
While predators are the most well-known cyber threat, they are still prevalent and a very real danger, even for children who have been warned about online predators. Although the majority of child sexual abuse does not occur online, in the Internet age, offline sex abuse is fueled by pedophiles' unprecedented access to child pornography and exacerbated as perpetrators post pictures online of their exploits.
Pornography is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal. More and more teens are now engaging in inappropriate online messaging of a sexual nature, which makes pornagraphy easier to access and share.
Cyber Bullying is defined as a child being harassed, threatened, insulted and otherwise tormented by another child online. 42% of children are cyber bullied, and 58% of children do not tell their parents when they are cyber bullied. Vicious, embarrassing, and hurtful messages from an anonymous attacker can be incredibly damaging to children, and in extreme cases can lead to murder or suicide.
As parents and teachers, we need to take the time to understand what they are doing online in their digital lives.
