JAPAN

FOOD

  • Japan is an Island, east of Korea
  • They get most their food from the ocean
  • So they mainly eat fish
  • They have mild climate
  • The rain also made it easy to grow rice

GEOGRAPHY

  • There were many dangers in Japan
  • Ex: Earthquakes, tidal waves, hurricanes, and volcanoes
  • Only 15% of the land is able to be used for farming
  • Rainfall helped make better resources
  • The Island protects them and provides food

CULTURE

  • Shinto- one traditional religion, "Way Of The Gods"
  • Japanese culture tries to find beauty in things
  • Most Honored: Mount Fuji, the tallest mountains
  • Prince Shotoku introduced Chinese Culture
  • Embassy: An office of government in another country

SOCIETY

  • Early Japan was divided into clans
  • Clan: Families related by blood or marriage
  • They often fought over property
  • Land was the main source of wealth
  • They mainly lived in villages and farmed or fished

EMPERORS

  • Japan's first emperors came from Yamato
  • Emperors were believed to be godlike
  • When chosen emperor, it was a gods' choice
  • When everything went bad, a gods' choice changed
  • Prince Shotoku was an appointed regent

INFLUENCE

  • China and Korea influenced Japan
  • China had a stronger influence
  • Ex: religion, government, writing systems, arts, agriculture
  • Japan either combined their traditions with China's,
  • Or Japan completely changed them.

FACTS

  • Legend has it, that Japan was formed by drops of water
  • The Chinese thought of Japan as Nippon
  • Nippon- "Land of the rising sun"
  • Buddhism was also promoted by Prince Shotoku
  • Japan has over 4,000 islands
