In Australia, swimming is one of the most popular activities especially in the hot summer. But it's important to know some safety tips as drowning is the second biggest reason of deaths in Australia.

ENSURE YOUR SAFETY

  • Make sure the beach your visiting is patrolled with professional lifeguards. It's extremely important that you have supervision from lifeguards in case of an emergency.
  • Check the conditions and weather as the waves can be deadly in different weathers.
  • Always swim in between the yellow and red flags.

ENSURE YOUR SAFETY

  • Always take someone with you when your going to the beach as its crucial you have someone with you in case of assistance.
  • If with children, make sure they're in arms reach at all times as tides and currants can easily pull them away.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Wear sunscreen at all times to save your skin.

  • Read and obey all signs around the water as doing the right thing protects you from any danger.
  • If on a boat, wear life jackets at all times to help you in an emergency.
  • Don't spend too much time in the sun as it causes sickness, nausea and isn't good for your health.
  • If in an emergency STAY CALM, STAY AFLOAT & SIGNAL FOR HELP.

  • 3,116 people drowned in the course of 11 years in Australia.
  • 20 seconds is all it takes for a child to drown.
  • 300 people drown every year.
  • Drowning is the number one cause of deaths for children under 5 years old.

  • 34% of the deaths were caused because of drugs and or alcohol before swimming.
  • An average of 30 children aged 0-4 years old drown each year.
  • 108 people drown in coastal waters every year.
