Lewis and Clark went on this expedition because much of the land west of the Mississippi was unknown to the Americans.

Lewis and Clark started in St. Louis, Missouri. Three boats carried four dozen members of the expedition. Lewis and Clark recorded their data in great detail.

Shortly before winter the expedition reached the homeland of the Mandans, a Native American nation located in what is now North Dakota.

The next spring, April 1805 the expedition se out for the Rocky Mountains. They had a new guide and interpreter, a Shoshone woman named Sacajawea.

When they reached the black hills, the landscape changed from flatlands to hills. They encountered squirrels, prairie dogs and other animals.

The explorers lost many horses with supplies. They had to face the current of the Missouri River.
