PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLANTS

CAM PLANTS

  • A plant that utilizes the Crassulacean acid metabolism as an adaptation for arid conditions
  • CO2 entering the stomata during the night is converted into organic acids
  • Organic acids release CO2 for the Calvin cycle during the day
  • thick, reduced leaves with a low surface-area-to-volume ratio
  • Stomata sunken into pits, thick cuticle

EXAMPLES

  • Some species of geraniums
  • Cactus
  • Pineapples
  • Agave

C3 PLANTS

  • utilizes the C3 carbon fixation pathway to convert CO2 into an organic compound
  • CO2 is first fixed into a compound containing 3 carbon atoms before entering the Calvin cycle
  • Ex: dandelions, trees, cotton, rice
  • Grow rapidly and need plenty of water
