Golf Performance

Matt Bridge - Projects 2019/20

The influence of a ball marker lines on putting performance

Aiming inaccuracies

  • This project will look at the influence of ball marking on aiming accuracy in golf putting.
  • Less skilled golfers have been found to consistently be worse at aiming the ball and putter than Tour Professionals.

Ball Marking

  • Two different visual alignment errors can occur in putting: the alignment of the ball to the start line and the face of the putter relative to this line at address (Dalton, 2013)
  • Shim et al (2012) found no effect of using a line on the ball, however this is still an approach regular used by Professional players.

The influence of practice structure on golf short-game performance

Practice Structure

  • Examining the ideas in Guadagnoli & Lindquist's (2007) ideas on the Challenge Point Framework in golf
  • Random vs blocked practice
  • Varied vs constant practice
  • Increasing Contextual Interference

Data from 2018/19 Study

Practice Structure

  • Using a pre-post repeated measures design
  • Data will be collected on the golf short-game area in a realistic environment
