Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. There is direct characterization and indirect characterization.

Direct characterization tells the audience what the personality is.
Example: The hyper dog and the slow turtle were both nice to the cat.

After reading this sentence, the personalities of the animals are directly revealed.

Indirect characterization shows things that reveals personality.
Example: The daughter rolled her eyes when her parents didn't buy her a car.

When the character rolls her eyes it reveals her spoiled personality.

When trying to identify indirect characterization, look for speech, thoughts, and actions.

Direct: Caroline is very nice and helpful.

Indirect: Caroline enjoys volunteering at the soup kitchen in her free time.

Characterization allows the reader to understand and relate better to the characters in the story. Speech and actions play an important role in the development of characters.
