• Catawba ; the catawba is the only tribe that officially recognized by the state of sc .
• Cherokee ; they made their homes in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains . They catawba & cherokee didn't get along .
• Yemassee ; they lived in Southern Georgia & florida .The spanish & yemassee relationship was peaceful at first , then they realized that the spanish was taking over .

• Lucas Vasquez de Aylloh was the first european to attempt a settlement in present day sc .
• The first settlement was at Waccamax river in present day Georgetown , San miguel de Gauldape .
• Most of these settlements didn't last .

• The africans was largely based on the planation system .
• The salves went through a passage called "the middle passage" from the west coast Africa .
• Most Africans spoke Gullah , it was a mixture of many spoken languages .

• During this time the major cash crop was cotton .
• Eliza Lucas Pinckey was a planation onwer who found out how to make & plant indigo .
• They also had a lot of salves codes , so slaves wouldn't rebel.

• They used slave labor to grow sugar cane.
• They used slaves for the hard labor , like growing rice , it took a lot of labor .
• To grow rice you have to grow it in marshy lands , & South Carolina was marshy.

• Eight lords Proprietors controlled South Carolina .
• The king & parliament left the colonies alone to control their own local government .
