who was  sacagawea?

sacagawea was born in 1788 in a shoshone indian camp. she became famous with her role with lewis and clark expedition.

EARLY life

  • she lived in rocky mountain homeland the first 12 years of her life.
  • when she was 12 sacagawea was captured by hidatsa indians.
  • when she was 16 a fur trader named charbonneau married her. they had son together.

interesting facts

  • sacagawea was a highly skilled food gather. she gathered wild plants who helped people during the winter. she used turnips which are called white apples

lewis and clark expedition

sacagawea meet lewis
and clark in 1804. they asked her to travel west with them.

she was helpful in many ways. helping them by translating. she also told them which plants to eat or use for medications.

the expedition started in 1805. sacagawea was given birth that winter. she brought hers child along carrying him in a board.

Early on Sacagawea was able to help out with the expedition. she helped to save some important supplies and documents with her quick action.

during the expedition they reached the land of the shoshone. lewis and clark met with local chief to trade for horses.

sacagawea was surprised that the chief was her brother. he helped them.

sacagawea continued on the journey. It was not easy but finally they reached the pacific ocean in 1805.

when did sacagawea die?
she returned home in 1806. she died in 1812.
