Slide Notes

These will be the PD goals for this school year. We're keeping it simple- nothing really new here. These are the goals on which we'll focus on PD days and our Thursday PD times.

We will also prioritize any requested outside PD to be in line with these goals.

A schedule of Thursday sessions is coming soon.

We won't have PLC's this year, but might have occasional task forces to discuss particular issues or projects.

PD GOALS

Mindfulness

Mindful Schools
One of our goals is to increase mindfulness throughout the whole school. Each division will use curriculum from Mindful Schools. At least one Thursday per month will be dedicated to mindfulness in the classroom training.

GiveTHX

The GiveTHX platform will continue to be available. Check out the Faculty PD Google Classroom

Equity & Inclusion

Faculty Committee, PD Day
Our last school-wide goal will be to continue our work with DEI in our community and in our curriculum. We hope to bring in a speaker on this topic on our PD day in October.
- Introduce DEI committee, ask for more
- Encourage people to keep going with Equity Conversations module for now

Remote Teaching

see Google Classroom
Another school-wide goal is to make our remote learning experiences and experiences for our off-campus learners the best it can be. We know that you will be working on this anyway, so we will dedicate some of our PD time to it. Likely one Thursday per month will be some sort of technology training.

If you haven't already, there were many resources shared about remote teaching on Google Classroom over the summer; this will remain the best place to start with those.

Congrats to all those who are Google Certified!!

Schedules for Thursday PD and faculty meetings coming soon...

BOOTCAMP

Supporting OC learners and preparing for remote learning
I am only going to offer a few tips that I think are useful...

Faculty PD Google Classroom

See the remote learning and summer PD modules in our faculty PD Google Classroom. During breakout groups, we will share with one another what summer PD we did.

Plan as if we are remote.

Geneseo example
Different for each division

Command-Tab
Command-Tilde

Command-TAB switches between applications on your Mac!
Command-Tilde switches between windows within the same application.

Zoom settings

Turn off full screen when screen sharing in Zoom, encourage students to do the same.

Untitled Slide

We tested out expensive cameras and they didn't make a huge difference. We spent money on devices and better wifi. Therefore, we didn't invest in fancy cameras, microphones, or other equipment for this year. But ASK for what you think would help!

An extra device?

For example... Chromebooks might be available as extra devices, or consider using a student's device, a phone, etc.

Document Cameras

A few document cameras (visualizers!) are coming, but consider using a phone with a ring stand (see Shannon?)

What if I just can't?

  • Restart stuff
  • Can a student help?
  • Ticket to MOST
  • Prioritize the students in front of you
  • Check in with OC students later
What if I just can't get Zoom/Meet/etc to work?
1. Restart Zoom, Chrome, computer
2. Can a student help, or can a student actually video conference with the OC student?
3. Ticket to MOST- then check email, they often respond very quickly
4. Don't lose too much class time (>10 min) troubleshooting, instead...
5. Make a point to check in with remote students later
6. Ron or Beth can also help!

Video Conferencing Platforms

In our summer faculty survey, over 70% said they used Zoom. Very few said they recorded class or used breakout rooms; of course that could all change.

Google Meet

  • + Mute all
  • + Disable chat
  • + End meeting
  • + Backgrounds
  • + More security
  • + Digital whiteboard
  • + Raise hand
Custom or blurred backgrounds

Google Meet

  • - Recording won't be free after 9/30
  • - They are adding breakout rooms but they won't be free after 9/30
  • - Also adding polling, attendance tracking, more for $$
We encourage you to try out Meet before 9/30, then we can determine if we want to invest in the paid features.

I recommend looking at Google's The Anywhere School to see all the Google Meet updates, as well as Google Classroom and others!

Zoom

  • 40-minute time limit could reappear anytime this school year
  • Plenty of warning?

GoGuardian

  • GoGuardian has a new video conference feature.
  • If all your students are on Chromebooks, try it out!

BREAKOUT ROOMS

Stay online or meet in person- your choice
Your group can stay on Zoom or meet up in person
