RACISM AND PREJUDICE

BY: LIAM KRAMMER AND WILL ELENTENY

Untitled Slide

  • -racism in the patronizing of someone of a different ethnic group, due to a stereotype that is formed beforehand -prejudice is a preconceived notion about someone not based on experience racism often begins with a prejudice towards a certain group and expands into a hatred for said race or group - the difference between racism and prejudice is that racism is a prejudice that is based on a certain race. Prejudice is not always based on race alone but on social status or one’s religion.

  • -Institutionalized racism- racism is build into the fabric of our society -Overt racism- over the top, straight forward racism -Internalized racism- accepting if your a minority and thinking you are lesser -Horizontal racism- racist towards every race, even your own race -Individual or interpersonal racism involves the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours of individuals. While this type of racism is sometimes overt it also includes ‘casual' or ‘every day' racism, incidents that aren't necessarily violent or consciously malicious but perpetuate negative stereotypes about different groups through jokes and offhand remarks. -Cultural racism is the social production and reproduction of values and standards which privilege one group's cultural heritage and identity over those of another. Cultural racism includes viewing conformity to the dominant culture as normal and desirable. This bias results in the people from non-dominant cultures and their customs and practices being viewed as unimportant, inferior. -a culture can't be racist -worst one is internalized racism because just because one who is a minority, believe they are entitled to more than other groups. We are not RACIST we believe that ALL groups are entitled to the same amount of respect and opportunities for success as the other. Believe that a group is entitled more than another based on race is racism

  • In eighth grade, we played Infant Jesus Prauge in basketball. IJP is mostly a black catholic grammar school, and my team was made up of white and Arabic kids. After we won the game, the opposing coach accused the refs of reffereeing the game in a manner in which we would end up win the game. Having another coach calling us"spoiled rich kids" really soured the experience of our last home game at Our Lady of the Woods.

MIZZOU TENSIONS

  • One example of racist activities in the America are the series of events that created tensions between black and white students at Mizzou. These were a result of the ferguson riots occurring close to campus. The riot was caused when a white police officer shot and killed the unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown. This caused as series events to unfold at the university that were full of racism and prejudice

Untitled Slide

  • What examples of internalized racism are present?
  • What actions should have the university taken?
  • Should the kids yelling racist slurs been expelled
  • How does this show a microcosm of the razor blade that can cause these tensions between races

Untitled Slide

  • The university should have expelled the kids responsible in an attempt to stop the racial tensions.

  • A.) An Oklahoma fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon sang a racist song about how there will never be black people allowed in their frat. They were on their way to Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s founders day on a coach bus when the song was recorded. The video was released in the subsequent days in which the frat sang the song. B.) Following the release of the video, two members of SAE were expelled from Oklahoma University. The other members of SAW had to participate in community service and attend cultural sensitivity training. People were outrage by this video because it demonstrated racial segregation that the fraternity participated in. C.) SAE was suspended and the frat house in Oklahoma was shut down. The fraternity promised to promote diversity and formally apologized. SAE also stated that they members were not taught the song by the higher ups in the fraternity. D.) What these young men did was an atrocity, but that doesn't change the fact that these people have freedom of speech. Also, no one was physically hurt in the process. Once again, I believe these kids got what they deserved; I wouldn’t want to be their defense lawyer. E.)This behavior is wrong because it is completely ignorant and shows that racism is an underlying factor in our society. It doesn't physically hurt anyone, but the kids and the frat for saying those things. F.) We still see racial incidents happening because since the beginning of America's history, racism has existed and we always continue to exist in some way. Sensitivity and diversity is why racism continues today. People would think after all this country has gone through that slavery would be at a bare minimum, but there are many people who can't let go of old traditions.

  • We believe that racism can't be fully eliminated because there will always be people that believe that their race is superior to other races, but it can be limited. Marist High School is a very diverse school in itself. We help combat racial incidents by learning to overcome racism and appreciate diversity. Throughout the school day there are a lot of prejudice moments that go unnoticed. We can help limit racism by become appreciative with the diversity we can experience
