BUBBLE MASS

DOES THE SIZE OF A BUBBLE AFFECT HOW FAST IT FALLS ?

Problem Question:

Does the size of a bubble affect how fast it falls ?

RESEARCH:

  • Bubbles can occur in many things from soap to chewing gum
  • A soap bubble is a thin film of soap particles that is filled with either gas or air
  • Bubbles are fun to create in chewing gum and blowing into a liquid through a straw
  • Bubbles occur in soda drinks as well to help them keep their fizz and taste
  • In essence, all liquids have the ability to make bubbles

HYPOTHESIS:

the weight and size of a bubble affect how fast it will fall

MATERIALS:

Pencil, foam, drinking straw, bubble solution, wide shallow bowl

PROCEDURE STEPS:

  • Fill the bowl with bubble solution
  • Poke the pencil through the side of the foam cup, near the bottom
  • Remove the pencil
  • Push the drinking straw through the hole so that It goes all the way inside your cup.
  • Turn the entire bubble pipe upside down into the bubble solution

PROCEDURE STEPS CONTINUED:

  • Lift the bubble pipe
  • Blow into the straw gently so it forms a bubble at the top of the cup
  • After a small bubble forms, twist the cup quickly release the bubble
  • At the same time hit the stopwatch
  • Time how long it takes for the bubble to hit the ground. Record it in a data table

PROCEDURE STEPS CONTINUED:

  • Blow 9 more small bubbles, record how long it takes for them to fall as well
  • Blow ten large bubbles, using the technique described above. Record it in the data table
  • Calculate the average time it took each type of bubble to hit the ground
