DEFINITION OF DISODER

  • The involuntary or habitual grinding of the teeth, typically during sleep.

WHO DOES BRUXISM AFFECT?

  • Bruxism affects 8% of adults.
  • A study shows a third of parents report symptoms of bruxism in their children.

CAUSES OF THE DISORDER

  • The causes of the disorder is unknown but there are studies that links it with other factors including
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Smoking and drinking
  • Fatigue
  • Snoring

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Teeth that are flattened, fractured, chipped or loose.
  • Worn tooth enamel, exposing deeper layers of your tooth.
  • Increased tooth sensitivity.
  • Headaches.
  • Earaches.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT BEHAVIOR

  • Some children with Bruxism have some behavior problems and stress.
  • Some adults with Bruxism have emotional stress.

TREATMENTS

  • Minimizing stress can alleviate symptoms for adults.
  • For severe and persistent Bruxism, a dentist may prescribe an oral appliance made of soft plastic to protect teeth.
  • Some cases Bruxism go away.
